How to Play Cricket

and Enjoy the Total Cricket Experience

"How to Play Cricket" shares everything I've learned as a cricket player, coach, fan and parent.

You can discover every secret and technique I've learned from from being involved with cricket for over 40 years.

Hi, I'm cricket coach Anthony Jenkins. There are literally hundreds of things you can do to learn how to play cricket, and how to get more fun out of being a cricket parent or fan.

I've written this book as a step-by-step guide to help you to share my passion.

This book is a great reference for anyone looking to get involved in cricket.

Whether you’re a player, parent, coach or fan, everyone will be able to take something from it.

If you are new to cricket or looking to increase your knowledge, "How to Play Cricket" is a must. It's packed with top tips and useful insights allowing you to easily learn and enjoy your experience of the game.

Ed Foster
Captain
Shropshire County Cricket Club

I first played cricket before the days of global televised cricket, structured coaching and cricket videos. The “MCC Cricket Coaching Book” was my bible, and my coaches were dedicated teachers or club amateurs developing youth cricket.

I learned more by watching black and white TV coverage of test matches, with the occasional trip to watch a Yorkshire home match. I was soon hooked on the game, but I wanted more!

I wanted a comprehensive book on how to play cricket and how to become more involved as a fan, but it didn't exist.

Outside my cricket club in 2009

This was very frustrating, but I learned gradually, with lots of mistakes on the way.

Roll on 40 years or so, and all the information I could possibly have wanted to get this total cricket experience is now freely available.

You can experience the game at many levels, by playing, watching, coaching, supporting, following international tournaments and controversies, and playing the many varieties of cricket computer game.

Having learned the hard way, I know how valuable all this is. But, bringing the important bits of cricket information together isn’t so easy. I realised that the book I wanted 40 years ago is out there now, but it still needed collecting together in one easily accessible place.

My web site gets lots of e-mails from people who feel the same way.

You don’t need to wait another 40 years
to build up the same knowledge!

All the information you need is collected in my e-book on How to Play Cricket. This brings together all the 21st century cricket resources that I’ve discovered, as well as many of the things that I’ve learned over the years as a parent, player and coach.

This is a great initiative!

The book does what it sets out to do, and provides a well laid out introduction on how to play cricket for parents and guardians for children of all ages and provides more in depth knowledge and information for players and others involved in the game.

The use of photographs and graphics to illustrate key points and the web links to other sources of information are excellent and keeps the interest of the user at all times.

I for one will be encouraging the use of this book at my Club.

What you’ll discover in this book

Cricket can be confusing if you’re a newcomer, or simply if there isn’t a cricket tradition in your country. So, the book starts with advice for beginners on how to play cricket, and then builds on this for those with more experience.

There’s cricket information here for everyone, whether you’re the parent of a junior cricketer, or a seasoned fan, or perhaps if you’re just looking for a top tip to help you with your batting technique.

The book explains how to play cricket, but there's more to this than the rules of the game. If you want to do well on the field then preparation is everything, so you’ll need to know how to buy the cricket equipment that’s right for you, how to get the best value from cricket coaching and the pros and cons of finding the right cricket club.

Although I’m just passionate about playing the game, I get even more enjoyment from keeping up with the competition and controversies in international cricket. This isn’t just about being a cricket fan, because watching the experts is also great way of improving your own game.

So, the book also has information on how you can keep up with live cricket, as well as where to look for great cricket videos. There’s also an article on the history of cricket, to show how you fit into the cricketing tradition.

You can also learn about women’s cricket, one of the fastest growing sports on the planet. And finally, you can learn more about the game from a collection of strange but wonderful cricket facts.

For easy reading, the e-book has a detailed contents page with hyperlinks to each article, and the articles are hyperlinked to many of the top cricket information sites on the web. This makes it very easy for you to read the book, and to reach all the latest online cricket news and the best online coaching resources.

Its also in a readily printable format so you can browse at your leisure.

This is the collection of cricket information that I wanted 40 years ago, but you can reach it now!

You’ll also receive these three bonus cricket resources that are essential to your success.

To my knowledge, these three bonuses are not available on any web site.

This may be because they’re unique to my own personal experience; however you’ll receive them free with your copy of “How to Play Cricket”.

Bonus #1

50 Essentials to Keep in Your Cricket Bag

Once you start to pack your cricket bag, you realise just how much equipment you need. Then, its so frustrating to arrive at a game to discover that you’ve left behind a vital piece of kit.

Its great to give junior players the responsibility of packing their own bag, but from my experience there’s still always one who arrives without a helmet, box or even cricket trousers!

The checklist of 50 Essentials to Keep in Your Cricket Bag means that neither you, nor perhaps your junior cricketer needs to suffer the same frustration again. The list is built up from many years of personal experience, and includes many essential items that I carry in my cricket bag, but you might not have considered.

It includes everything that you may ever need to bring to a game, so you can pick and choose from this master checklist to create a personalised list that works for you.

Stick to your list and your cricket bag will always carry everything that you need to succeed!

Bonus #2

How to Organise a Junior Cricket Match

So, you’re the new manager of a junior cricket team, the season starts soon, and the fixture list shows that your team has a home game in the first round of the challenge cup. What’s more, the match has to be completed before the end of the second week of the season!

This scenario actually happened to me, and I had a very fast learning curve to organise the game and prepare my best team – cup matches are fun, but there are no more games once your team is knocked out. Since then, I’ve learned by my mistakes and organised many more junior matches.

The same principles always apply, and I can share my experience with you so you don’t need to climb the same steep learning curve.

How to Organise a Junior Cricket Match includes features on all the steps you need to follow to book a match date, how to pick your team, arrange a match ball, prepare your team to play, organise scoring, look after your visitors and what to do after the match.

This isn’t exhaustive, but it’s a good starting point, and it shows you how good organisation can make the match enjoyable for everyone.

Bonus #3

Top 50 Cricket Websites

Ever spent time trawling the web for cricket information, just to be frustrated that you couldn’t find exactly what you wanted? Many cricket web sites promise much, but don’t deliver.

I had the same problem before producing my web site and e-book, but writing these has helped me to sort out the good cricket sites from the bad and the ugly. Now, you can share my experience.

My top 50 sites are grouped into general sites, selected national boards, cricket on TV, cricket streaming, cricket news, cricket magazine sites, cricket games, cricket equipment, cricket wallpapers, cricket coaching, finding a cricket club and women’s cricket.

The entire list is hyperlinked, so no need for any cutting and pasting into your browser address bar.

You’ll find lots of lists of cricket sites on the web. However, the Top 50 Cricket Websites includes only high quality, well targeted sites that deliver what they promise.

So, no need to waste time browsing for elusive cricket information. You can learn from my experience to find out all that you’ll need!
